Foundation wall

They are building a new farm house, the first two story structure is roughed out but we spent the day building the foundation wall out of rocks and then helping pour the concrete and placing a pillar for the roof.

Livestock

We have half a dozen, free-range chickens and roosters to make sure we wake up early. There are four pigs and a farm dog, Estrellita. Estrellita has freaky, pretty white eyes.

La Finca Villa Luna

We've gone up in the highlands to stay on a Eco-agriculture farm. We've been tending the coffee plants which are interspersed with banana, sugar cane, passion fruit and a variety of other things including yucca (which we cooked for dinner).

The Charles Darwin Research Station

We spent the morning wandering around the research station. It takes about four hours but was incredibly interesting. They are breeding a few different species of the giant tortoises and releasing them back to their appropriate islands. Of the 15 original species only 11 remain but the breeding programs are making good headway.

The Galápagos Iguanas

There are a few different types of iguanas here but my favorite is the marine Iguana.

Puerto Ayora

So far, in our first brief walk around town, we've seen sea turtles, iguanas (it's nesting season), tiny black crabs, big red crabs, sea lions (a nursing mother and her pup on the sidewalk by the fish market), and dozens of different birds. The town has murals, statues and funky little art galleries everywhere.

Galápagos Islands

We flew in to Balta today. Then took a bus, a ferry, another bus and a taxi to the Galápagos Native hostel. We'll stay here until tomorrow afternoon and then go to the farm for a few days.
